My bicolor butterflly bush...

June 16,2007

The above cannas are fabulous! I don't remember buying this, but it's cool anyway...the pond and Belinda's Dream rose...my yard is becoming a private oasis, ahhh. The path on the west side of the house is filling in nicely. The plants? Rose of Sharon trees, hardy hibiscus, hyacinth bean vine on trellis'. Looking good!

My brothers' Gnome Garden

I did my brother's landscaping today...he has a new house and it needed flowers in the beds (look at 1st pic of before, blech)...I asked him to be thinking of some sort of theme...yellow flowers? Purple? Instead he called me and was all excited saying he found his garden theme and it was to be GNOMES! Ok...tacky, but he was all happy about it...I'm posting pics of before/after/gnomes. I planted 2 flats of light colored caladiums, 3 alstromeria's, 9hostas(bulbs),3 astillbe's(bulbs),12orange cannas(bulbs) and 2 elephant ear(bulbs). I hope all the bulbs make it!! He planted his gnomes...How's the after?

Bird tragedy...

Well, the baby birds made it through the storm, which wasn't bad here in Anna. However, I woke up this morning and in my bed, on the pillow next to me was one of the baby birds...dead. My 27lb cat must have caught it and brought it in...yuck. Thanks kitty. Now there are only 2 left.

Snow on Easter? Oh no!! My seedlings!

Well, Easter Sunday has come and gone and with it the threat of 30 degree days!! I protected all my hyacinth bean vine seedlings with a styrofoam cup with a rock placed on top. I went out the next morning and all my babies were just fine, a-ok. Stupid weather people, frightening all us silly gardeners with the threat of snow on Easter in Texas!!!
I also saw my finch babies for the 1st time today. Back in November a purple finch mated pair decided to make a nest in my outdoor blinds that are rolled up. Since then, I have watched them from my window court, make 2 nests, lay eggs, watched eggs hatch and watched mama as she sat on nest and dad brings food...all very exciting! Today, while mom was gone I slid a chair up and climbed up. What I saw doesn't really look like birds yet, just a breathing mass of funky looking sparse feathers. But, I am excited that these guys have made it!

Gardeners are - let's face it - control freaks. Who else would willingly spend his leisure hours wresting weeds out of the ground, blithely making life or death decisions about living beings, moving earth from here to there, changing the course of waterways? The more one thinks about it, the odder it seems; this compulsion to remake a little corner of the planet according to some plan or vision.
- Abby Adams, What is a Garden Anyway

Introduction!

Well, this is the start of my first blog...stylist gone gardening!
I'm a hairstylist in Dallas and live in Far North Texas. I retain the sanity that is lost through doing hair in my garden. I have to say that gardening is truly addicting and I sure wish I had bought a house years earlier so that I could have discovered this great obsession. I'm a bit of a plant whore right now...I had a brand new landscape (put in by builder) and when I moved into my dream house I discovered i'm deathly allergic to the bermuda grass he planted. The past 3 years have been spent in the effort of removing hated bermuda grass so maybe I can live drug free in my house :) This blog will chronicle my journey of bermuda grass annhiliation!
